The story of Ganesha and Kubera:

One tale, taken from the Purana, describes that one day the treasurer of Swarga (paradise) and god of prosperity, Lord Kubera, went to Mount Kailash to receive Shiva's darshan (vision) and invite him and Mata Parvati to a feast he was hosting. He was excessively proud, he invited Shiva to a feast in his glorious city, Alakapuri, to show him all his riches. Shiva grinned and said, "I can't come, but you can invite my son Ganesha, but I'll warn you he has an insatiable hunger." Kubera was very confident that he would satisfy the hunger of a little kid and took Ganesha to his city. After the welcoming rites were performed the feast was served. There were all varieties of delicious cuisines.

Little Ganesha ate all the food cooked for the guests and he kept calling for more. Kubera sent his men to the nearby villages to get more food, but Ganesha's hunger could not even be satisfied. Lord Ganesha finally ate the nearby utensils, furniture and other items. “If you don’t give me more food, I will eat you too,” said Ganesha to Kubera.

Frightened and desperate, Kubera ran to Mount Kailasha to seek help from Lord Shiva and Parvati. Mata Parvati gave him a fistful of rice and told him to offer it to Ganesha with Love. Kubera returned to his city and gave the rice to Ganesha, after which instantly Ganesha was satisfied and calmed. Hence Kubera realized his mistake after consulting with Lord Shiva and Mata Parvati. Kubera learned that he had become proud, greedy and just wanted to show off his wealth to the guests.
