Why is Wikipedia Asking for Donations?

Wikipedia is a multilingual online encyclopedia created and maintained as an open collaboration project by a community of volunteer editors using a wiki-based editing system. It is the largest and most popular general reference work on the World Wide Web.

On 15 January 2001, Wikipedia was established and developed by Jimmy Wales and Larry Sanger. Sanger invented his name as a portmanteau of "wiki" and "encyclopedia" terms. Initially, a database in the English language, variants of Wikipedia were soon created in other languages.

Fun Fact: Wikipedia includes over 54 million articles that attract 1.5 billion unique visitors per month.

Wikipedia is operated by the non-profit group Wikimedia Foundation, which also supports a variety of other initiatives like:

In 2015, the Wikimedia Foundation had asked its readers for contributions to keep its sister sites accessible and secure. The contributions have helped to pay wages to the company's reporters and other staff.

ARE THEY ASKING DONATIONS ONLY FROM INDIA?

India is one of the major markets for Wikipedia. Indians viewed Wikipedia more than 771 million times in November 2019 which is their fifth-highest number of views. Yet Wikipedia isn't just telling Indian people to contribute. They are asking people from all around the world to make donations!

WHAT IS THE AMOUNT OF DONATION?

The online website encourages its Indian users to contribute between Rs.150 and Rs. 5,000. Consumers may choose between Rs.150, Rs.300, Rs. 500, Rs.1,000, Rs.1,500, Rs.3,000 and Rs.5,000 as donation amounts that can be paid through their Visa, MasterCard, or RuPay credit or debit cards or through net banking, UPI or Paytm.

In a statement to Indian readers, Wikipedia said, "We depend on donations averaging about ₹1,000, but 98% of our users don’t donate. If you donate just ₹ 150, Wikipedia could keep thriving for years. Most people donate because Wikipedia is useful. If Wikipedia has given you ₹ 150 worth of knowledge this year, take a minute to donate. Show the volunteers who bring you reliable, neutral information that their work matters. Thank you.”
